Man Who Set Out on Round-the-World Journey on Foot Returns After 28 Years

A British man who set out on a round-the-world journey on foot has returned home 28 years later.

Karl Bushby, now 57, began his expedition on 1 November 1998, at the age of 28. He started his journey from Chile. Over the years he covered 50,000 km, crossed 29 countries on foot and returned to the United Kingdom.

He had set two strict rules for the journey: not to use transportation and not to take shortcuts, but to cover the entire planned route.

On Thursday Bushby announced that he had crossed the English Channel and headed toward his native city of Hull.

“After all these years it is wonderful to feel home soil under my feet. It was not easy, but I am doing this to prove that I can do more than I think,” he said.

Bushby covered the penultimate leg of his journey by swimming. He crossed the English Channel in the course of 20 hours and set foot in the United Kingdom on 5 October at 15:30.
