EU Increases Imports of Russian Liquefied Gas

Despite the restrictions and Brussels’ policy of abandoning Russian energy carriers, in September the European Union increased imports of liquefied natural gas from Russia by 60% compared to August.

The value of the Russian liquefied natural gas purchased by the European Union amounted to 615 million euros. Almost three quarters of the physical volume of supplies, 72%, went to the ports of France. The remaining batches were supplied to Netherlands and Portugal.

Researchers note that despite the sharp rise in supplies in September, the volumes of imports of Russian liquefied natural gas are still considerably below the levels recorded before February 2022.

According to data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air operating in Finland, the growth in European imports was recorded five months after the ban on short-term contracts for Russian liquefied natural gas in the EU entered into force. Supplies under some long-term contracts concluded earlier are still permitted until January 2027.
