National Assembly Set Number of Members of Church Inquiry Commission

The National Assembly at its 6 October sitting adopted, with 62 votes in favor from deputies of the “Civil Contract” faction, the decision on setting the number of members of the inquiry commission studying issues relating to the Armenian Apostolic Church. The commission will have 11 members. There were no votes against or abstentions. Deputies of the “Armenia” and “Strong Armenia” factions did not take part in the vote.

The draft decision was presented by “Civil Contract” faction deputy Arman Yeghoyan. In the demand for the creation of the commission he is named as chairman of the commission, and the term of its powers is set at up to six months.

Included in the scope of the study are issues relating to morality in the church, the transparency and accountability of financial information, the proper convening of church representative assemblies, the use of property belonging to the church, as well as the separation of the church and state authority.

The demand for the creation of the commission also provides for the possibility of inviting clergymen and other persons to the sittings and receiving written and oral positions and clarifications from them.

The inquiry commission had been created by force of law on October 2, at the demand of at least one quarter of the total number of deputies.
