More Than 1,600 Journalists Killed Worldwide Over 20 Years

More than 1,600 journalists have been killed worldwide over the past 20 years, which means that one journalist has been killed every four days. This was stated in UNESCO’s new report.

“Since 2006, when UNESCO began carrying out regular monitoring, 1,641 journalists have been killed worldwide, on average one every four days,” the report said.

It is noted that armed conflicts are the main factor in journalists’ deaths.

Over the past two years, in countries where there have been no armed conflicts, the number of killings of journalists has reached its lowest level in the past 18 years (62 killings).

UNESCO noted that the number of women journalists killed has also decreased. However, cases of deaths of media workers aged 25-29 have become more frequent.
