Kallas: The European Union Must Also Take Part in Negotiations on Ukraine

EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas has commented on statements coming from Washington that, within the framework of a Russian-Ukrainian settlement, Ukraine’s security guarantees and the broader European security architecture are being considered.

The European side stresses that if an agreement on the settlement of the conflict is signed, the European security architecture cannot be revised within its framework. That document must also guarantee that Russia will not rearm and will not attack again.

“We already have a security system. The problem is that Russia constantly violates the treaties on which that architecture is based. NATO did not pose a threat to Russia in 2021 and is not a threat today either,” Kallas stressed.

In her formulation, Vladimir Putin has no right of veto on issues concerning European security. And Ukraine must be fully integrated into the European security architecture.

Kallas also stated that the European Union must also take part in the negotiations being conducted on Ukraine.
