Trump Considers Viktor Orbán for UN Secretary-General

US President Donald Trump is promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a candidate for the next UN secretary-general. This was reported by “The Jerusalem Post”, citing sources in three countries.

According to the publication, American officials have already proposed that Orban take part in the race. He has expressed interest, but has not yet made a final decision.

Washington assumes that Russia and China may also support Orban’s candidacy. According to the assessment of one US official, at least eight of the 15 members of the UN Security Council may be in favour of his candidacy. However, no country has publicly confirmed its support.

Orban’s possible nomination may prove controversial because of his close ties with Russia and China, as well as criticism of the policy he has pursued in Hungary. There has not yet been an official announcement regarding the candidacy.

The term of office of incumbent UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expires on December 31.
