Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ararat Mirzoyan has addressed the report on the possible consequences of suspending Armenia’s membership in the EAEU.
“Our EAEU partners say that under the Vienna agreement there is such a thing, that an EAEU member state can be removed or its membership frozen. Yes, there is such a thing, but from a very specific viewpoint or with justification,” he said, stressing that for that it is necessary that the partner whom the other partners are dissatisfied with in the international or integration organization and want to remove must violate its obligations.
According to him, Armenia has not violated any obligation within the EAEU and does not intend to violate any. “Therefore, in legal terms I understand that perhaps our partners have made efforts to find legal justifications, but I do not agree with the justifications presented. We all understand: the legal is the legal, but here there is a political impulse,” Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized.
Ararat Mirzoyan noted that Armenia will fulfill its obligations within the organization and its bilateral obligations in good faith and will not violate them. “But, unfortunately, we see examples of the opposite in recent months,” he said, adding: “Our position is the following: whatever happens, at the center of our decisions and conduct are our statehood, the independence and sovereignty of Armenia, and also the right to make independent decisions. We will not make this a subject of bargaining,” he stressed.
