Earth’s Ice Is Melting at a Dangerous Rate

According to a new UN report, the rapid melting of the Earth’s glaciers could cause irreversible damage to the planet. Scientists call for reducing global warming as quickly as possible after temporarily exceeding 1.5°C, bringing it to a level below 1°C.

Compared to the pre-industrial period, the Earth’s average temperature has already risen by 1.3°C, and if current policies continue it could reach 2.8°C.

According to the report, the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are today melting about six times faster than in the 1990s. In the last five years Switzerland has lost 20% of its glaciers’ ice. Scientists warn that the melting will lead to a rise in sea level, will endanger water resources and could cause serious changes in the oceans.
