National Assembly President Ruben Rubinyan has stated that the new Constitution envisages making unamendable the article defining Armenian as the sole state language of the Republic of Armenia. Rubinyan said this in a video posted on his Facebook page.
“Under the new Constitution, the article defining Armenian as the sole state language of the Republic of Armenia will become unamendable. That is, unlike the procedure set by the current Constitution, it will become impossible to amend that article and, consequently, to change the state language or add state languages. Why is this important? Because in this way we will protect the main pillar of our national identity, our language,” the National Assembly president noted.
Rubinyan criticized proposals voiced by various figures on granting state status to other languages, mentioning Russian and English in that context.
“No, we do not need new state languages. Armenian is the state language, the language of the state-founding people. It has performed its role as a state language for centuries and will perform it forever,” he stated.
The National Assembly president also called for ensuring that the opposition does not obstruct the adoption of that amendment.
