Lebanese Prime Minister Warns Against Dragging Lebanon Into New Regional War

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, in what was likely a message addressed to Hezbollah, has warned against dragging the country into a new war if the conflict in Iran resumes. The prime minister said this after a meeting with President Joseph Aoun, during which the officials discussed developments taking place in Lebanon and the region.

“In light of the dangers of a resumption of war in the region, I once again warn against dragging Lebanon into yet another futile adventure serving foreign interests, as well as involving it in confrontations whose consequences the country cannot afford,” Salam said.

He stressed that the Lebanese people, particularly the residents of the south of the country, have already paid a heavy price, with victims and the loss of livelihoods and homes.

“The defense of Lebanon is a national responsibility, which requires placing its supreme interests above everything else and ensuring that decisions on war and peace remain exclusively in the hands of the state and its constitutional institutions. We will not accept that a fate not chosen by the people of Lebanon be imposed on them, nor that their homeland again be turned into a theater of others’ conflicts,” the prime minister added.

Salam emphasized the need to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty, protect its people and make every effort to prevent a new war.

Recently, speculation has circulated more frequently that new American-Israeli strikes toward Iran are possible after the United States midterm elections and Israel’s general elections.
